5 things to know before gettiNg hair extensions

Thinking about getting hair extensions is so exciting..its like entering into a whole new world full of new possibilities. But its also a huge commitment and its important to do your research and make sure its the right choice for you! So, without further ado … here are my top five things to know before getting hair extensions.

  1. Consider your lifestyle. Hair extensions aren’t just a financial commitment but a time commitment too. They require extra care and everyday maintenance to ensure they stay healthy and last. Be prepared to blow dry your hair after every wash, to braid your hair before bed, and to brush your hair at least 3 times daily-and this is just a few examples! If this already seems overwhelming to you then maybe semi-permanent extensions aren’t the right fit for you. Occasional use, clip-in hair extensions may be better suited for you, and if so-there is nothing wrong with that! It’s better to find out sooner than later.

  2. Educate yourself. It’s okay not to know everything about extensions beforehand, that’s what a consultation is for. But it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the different methods and maintenance for each method, so you know what questions to ask and you have an idea of what technique you think would work best with your lifestyle and needs. Of course, an extension tech will know better what method will be best for your hair but having some basic knowledge will help you both during the consultation.

  3. Be Prepared to pay $$ Good quality hair extensions and the skilled hands of a qualified, experienced technician are expensive. Good hair extensions aren’t cheap and cheap hair extensions aren’t good- it’s as simple as that. You get what you pay for. Quality extensions may be a bit of an initial investment but they pay for themselves in the long run, as they last so much longer than cheap hair, which would have to be replaced regularly- not to mention will damage your hair.

  4. Dye your hair to your desired colour before booking a consult! It may seem like an obvious one, but I’ve had many ladies come in for a consult and colour match, only to tell me that they’re dying their hair next week…please don’t waste my time or yours! A colour match can’t be done before you change your hair colour, it would be impossible for me to know exactly what tones your hair will be until afterwards. And a successful colour match is key to a seamless natural blend.

  5. Hair Extensions don’t damage your hair. Yes, that’s right! Good quality hair extensions don’t damage your hair but improper care and leaving them in past the recommended time does! Be sure to know all the aftercare before leaving your stylists chair, as well as recommended hair products that are safe for extensions. Please research multiple technicians in your area before committing to one. I can’t count the number of clients I get that say the last time they had hair extensions they had an awful experience ... either due to an unqualified tech installing their hair poorly, or being sold cheap hair or both!! For this reason, please please do your research!

Whatever your reason for considering hair extensions, this is a great opportunity to try something new and switch up your look! If you would like more information on the different methods we offer or to book a consultation, drop us a line! :)
