Frequently Asked Questions
Getting hair extensions can be an empowering experience not only for your appearance but your self-confidence as well. However, we do understand that it is big decision financially, which is why we want you to make an informed decision so you can enjoy your new-do without worry! Read on for the down-low on all things extensions. You are one step closer to fabulous hair!!!
Can I book an appointment as a new client without a consultation?
The short answer is no. Consultations are mandatory so we can see your hair in person (before the installation appointment) and discuss which method would be most suitable for you. During your consultation we will go over the different methods, your desired length, hair goals, colour and how much hair is needed. Colour matching is important since most people have multiple tones in their natural hair and we want to make sure the colour blend is seamless!
What is the difference between Remy and Non-Remy hair?
Remy hair is the best quality of human hair on the market. "Remy" means that the hair cuticles are all aligned in the same direction, as naturally grown on your head. Non-remy hair is defintely cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Non-remy hair is collected from multiple sources or donors , often times from the floors of salons and temples, resulting in misaligned hair strands. When hair strands are not placed in the same direction, the cuticles cause friction and result in tangling and matting. Hair extensions made from non-remy hair will not last, and may cause damage to your natural hair. Vanity Girl uses remy hair extensions, only the best for our clients!
What length does my hair need to be to get hair extensions?
We recommend hair at least 6 inches to ensure the bonds are undetectable and comfortable.
What will my hair be like once the hair extensions are removed?
Once the extensions are removed, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner to remove any residue from the adhesive/ bonds. You may even find that your hair has even grown since the initial installation!
Will hair extensions damage my hair?
Hair extensions will not damage your hair, given that you take proper care of them, and follow the recommendations given to you by your stylist. The health of your hair and your extensions is also dependent on removing your hair extensions in a timely manner to prevent damage/ tangling to your hair. Please refer to our "After Care" down below for more information on the do's and don't's of hair extension care/ maintenance to ensure long-lasting, beautiful hair for both your natural hair as well as your extensions.
Can I use heated tools on my hair extensions?
Vanity Girl uses only 100% human remy hair, meaning that you can style it just as you would your natural hair. It is advisable to use a heat protectant spray prior to using styling tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners and other tools, to ensure the longevity of your hair extensions. We also recommend using a lower heat setting when styling your extensions to maintain the quality. Furthermore, avoid applying direct heat on or near the application site (tape or bead) to ensure the installation lasts.
Do you do colour as well?
Vanity Girl is an extensions only salon, we specialize exclusively in hair extension services- we do not offer colour in salon. We recommend scheduling your root touch up appointments in between removal and installation of extensions. Never colour your hair extensions at home! Please seek out a professional hairdresser, preferably one that is well versed in working with clients with extensions. Above all, avoid applying the dye to the bonds as this can break down the bond. Keep in mind that Vanity Girl is not responsible for the end result of your extensions if they are altered in any way, shape or form.
AFTERCARE
Do not wash hair up to 48 hours after initial application of extensions; allow up to 2 weeks to become comfortable with extensions.
Extensions may be painful or uncomfortable for the first few days.
Before washing, brush all tangles out using gentle strokes. Brush hair from the root down with a recommended hair extension brush, up to 3-4 times daily.
Do NOT leave bonds wet for long periods of time.
After being in a pool, hot tub, body of water, or any other chemically treated water, wash thoroughly with a PH balanced formula- colours and quality of hair may be altered depending on the chemical make-up of water treatment systems.
Hair extensions are not recommended for use in chlorinated water, saltwater, and hard water with a high mineral content or in hotter climates than normally accustomed to as damage or discolouration can occur.
We recommend pulling hair back into a loose braid with a soft hair tie when going to sleep to prevent tangling/matting.
ONLY use extension products prescribed by your hair extension tech/stylist. Do not use any over the counter chemicals such as; perm solutions, permanent or semi-permanent hair colour, shampoos that contain sulphate, or any products not approved by your stylist.
Do not apply any oil-based products directly to the bond, instead hydrate hair mid-shaft down with serums and/or oils.
When styling hair with hot tools, avoid heat to the bond.
Do NOT use natural and organic shampoo and conditioners.
